That said and, perhaps even underlining that point further, the prose throughout this book was perfect. So interesting and it now has completely changed the way I’m looking back on certain pieces of the story. I don’t think it was ever explicitly said that they were white, but I did some Googling and Baldwin said that he didn’t want to tackle sexuality and race in the same story in this case. I genuinely thought the entire time that David was a Black man and Hella was a Black woman from the very beginning, which I now realize was never confirmed. Something that I just now learned, after I was completely finished reading this book is that neither David nor Hella were POC.

It’s truly a beautiful and tragic story from start to finish. He even captures Giovanni and his frustration and desperation to have David stay with him, permanently.

He captures his constant denial and inability to accept the challenge that lies in front of him, embodied by Giovanni. Baldwin captures his own freedom in the much more openminded city of Paris alongside how trapped he constantly feels by his own feelings and the reality of his life in America. To say I was transported into the life of David, into 1950s Paris, and into Giovanni’s room is an understatement. This is my first James Baldwin and, while I’m not surprised by this, I was completely floored by his writing.
